Medications

Dr. Embrey offers medications as first line treatment for moderate to severe psychiatric illnesses. Medications, in combination with other treatments, are extremely effective at treating psychiatric illness.

Keeping this in mind, there are many cases in which medications may not be indicated, including:

  • Mild or sub-threshold psychiatric illness

  • Young children or elderly patients

  • Sensitivity to medication side effects

  • Certain medical illnesses

  • Risk of medication interactions

  • Patients who are medication naive

  • When lifestyle change is more indicated

  • When patients request other treatments first

  • When symptoms are situational (adjustment disorder, grief)

Additionally, patients may ask to be taken off their medications. In these cases, we will work very closely to ensure all symptoms are stabilized before each medication will be considered and tapered individually. We may also achieve this with the support of psychotherapy and other integrative therapies.
